Reading Rage and Applebee’s Team Up in the Fight Against Cancer
The Reading Rage and three greater Reading area Applebee’s Restaurants are partnering to raise awareness of childhood cancer through sponsorship of an Alex’s Lemonade Stand (www.alexslemonade.org) at all of the Reading Rage home games.
In 2000, a 4 year old cancer patient named Alexandra “Alex” Scott announced a seemingly simple idea – she was holding a lemonade stand to raise money to help “her doctors” find a cure for kids with cancer. The idea was put into action by Alex and her older brother, Patrick, when they set up the first “Alex’s Lemonade Stand for Childhood Cancer” on their front lawn in July of 2000. For the next 4 years, despite her deteriorating health, Alex held an annual lemonade stand to raise money for childhood cancer research. Following her inspirational example, thousands of lemonade stands and other fundraising events have been held across the country by children, schools, businesses, and organizations, all to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for childhood cancer. On August 1, 2004, Alex died peacefully at the age of 8. She had raised over $1 million for childhood cancer research in her short lifetime. Applebee’s Restaurants in the mid-Atlantic region have raised over $800,000 since August 2005 for this cause and continue to broaden the scope of how they raise money. James Ballentine, Wyomissing Applebee’s Manager says, “Like the Reading Rage, Applebee’s looks to apply the team concept in all that we do. Working as a team with the Rage and Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation will surely result in helping the Rose Group to reach our $1,000,000 goal for Alex’s Lemonade Stand.”
Also in 2000, Archie Moylan, a founder of the Rage (and former player, coach and general manager) passed away due to cancer. This led to the United Soccer Leagues establishing the Archie Moylan Award to recognize a member of the USL family that has shown great courage or dedicated humanitarianism. The Operations Mission of the local Applebee’s restaurants is to “Passionately do the right thing for the guest, the team, and the neighborhood”. The Reading Rage is proud to be partnered with a local business presence who shares this same vision for the local community and for a great organization like the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. Rage G.M. Art Auchenbach states, “Raising awareness and money for cancer research is part of the Rage history. Our team has witnessed the physical and emotional damage this disease causes individuals, families, and organizations. We are proud to play a small part in the valiant battle against this menacing disease. The Reading Rage look forward to the local soccer community support of our ongoing fight against cancer.”
U14 Lady rage go undefeated at toyota classic
The U14 Lady Rage put on an impressive show as they played three friendlies at the Toyota College Showcase Classic. Their First game was against the #13 team in Eastern PA, FC Delco. After a tight first half, the Lady Rage found their groove and possessed the ball for most of the second half on Hempield's large turf field, which played right into the team's style of play. The Lady Rage simply wore down the FC Delco and broke the ice with a Rayanne Fink corner that Sarah Graham easily headed home. Lissie Delp scored the second goal to seal the victory. Their second game was against FC Revolution and despite possessing the ball for most of the game and having a 1-0 first half lead due to a Paige Miller laser from 25 yards out. However, a late direct kick quickly taken by FC Revolution with ten minutes left caught the Rage off guard and proved to be the equalizer as the ladies tied 1-1. Their final game on Sunday was the most impressive as the Lady Rage defeated York United 5-0. Hanna Bauman had three crosses that were all finished by Emma Fishburn. The sweetest was a perfectly placed cross that Emma easily headed home. Also scoring were Sara Graham and Kiersten Kunkle. Overall the weekend was a success as all the ladies played well.
RAGE U17 DEFEAT BERMUDA NATIONAL TEAM 2-0
On a beautiful Friday April evening in Reading, PA, the Rage 17 Super Y team kicked off against the Bermuda U17 National Team. In the opening five minutes, the Rage played a precise and powerful game that knocked the “Gombey Warriors” out of their rhythm early.
In the 19th minute, the Rage took a deserved 1-0 lead via a cross from the right that was half volleyed into the net by Nick Matthews.
The “Gombey Warriors’” regrouped after that and played a well-organized offside trap that closed down the space for the Rage to penetrate.
In the 43rd minute, Bermuda Defender Wolffe made a perfect tackle to deny a break away opportunity for the Rage. However, a quick Rage counter attack started given the Bermuda defense fits, forcing Bermuda Keeper Dill to come off his line several times to shut down the angle and make key saves.
However, the precision of the Rage counter attacks finally paid off as Patrick Letourneau easily collected the rebound after a hard shot that was deflected wide and buried into the back of the net to seal the victory.

Corey Hertzog Selected to SUPER Y all-select Team
Corey Hertzog, considered one of the premier players in 89/90 age group, returned for the third straight year to the Super Y-League ODP camp in Florida. This is the second year in a row that Hertzog was selected to the SYL Select Team. Last year the team visited Germany and the Czech Republic where Hertzog gained valuable experience playing against top European youth players and clubs, exposing him to different styles of play and a higher level of competition.
“The game in Germany was slower and more calculated,” said Hertzog. “They looked to hold the ball for long periods of time. They were also very big and very skilled in the air, a totally different style of soccer. They didn't like the high level of pressure our American team played. It seemed to disrupt their tactics when we would press them in the back.”
“Playing against the professional youth academies in Europe taught me to play at 100% every time I step onto the field,” added Hertzog. “Just like these camps, it made me want to go out and work harder because, over there, if you are not at your best each day, there is someone waiting to take your spot from you.”
Hertzog's experience playing for the Rage Super Y program has paid off as he has committed to play for Penn State in the Fall and has earned training time with the PDL side this past summer as part of the Rage’s USL Super-20 League team.
“I started playing with the Rage about three years ago,” said Hertzog. “The entire experience has been very rewarding. They developed me into the player I am today and I owe a lot of credit to my coach Sean Murphy. My aim is still to play at the professional level and Reading has helped me get there.”

Hertzog and Sands Choose top College Soccer Programs
Corey Hertzog of the U17 Rage has decided to take his soccer career to the next level by playing at Big Ten Power Penn State University next Fall.
“Penn State was always my first choice,” said Hertzog. “I didn't want to play somewhere too far from home. Penn State allows me to go back and forth every once in a while.”
In the summer Hertzog plans to remain with the ever-developing amateur system of the Reading Rage.
“Playing in the Premier Development League with the Rage is something I am looking forward to,” said Hertzog. “I have already discussed that with coach [Barry] Gorman (PSU). He said it would be fine as long as I begin to focus on college ball about a month before the start of the season.”
Jordan Sands (U17 Rage) will continue his career at Division III powerhouse Messiah College. Messiah has received ten straight NCAA bids, made the NCAA Final Four nine times, including the last four, been National Champions five times, including three straight (2004-2006), and been ranked in the NCAA top twenty five every year since joining in 1981. Messiah boasts one of the most rigorous regular season schedules in all of Division III and their aggressive spring season focuses on individual and team development. Messiah's tradition of developing top players is reflected in the fact that three have won the Division III National Player of the Year awarded by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) including this year's winner Kai Kasiguran. After an exciting game ended in a 2-2 scoreline, the teams played 20 minutes of extra time, followed by a further 10 minutes without goalkeepers, but neither side were able to break down the opposition defences. The game was finally declared a tie with both teams taking home championship trophies.
Congratulations to all the boys for a great team effort throughout the play-offs.
